Whether it’s an idea for a business or an idea within your business, it’s often the idea’s and the dreams that come easy. For most creatives coming up with ideas is rarely the problem, more often than not it’s deciding which idea to turn into a reality. But the disconnect between how many ideas we’re coming up with and how many become actions and then realities is frightening. To think of how much potential is being wasted because enough life isn’t breathed into an idea makes me shudder.
So why the disconnect?
Part of the reason is mindset. Ideas take courage. But part of the reason is because an idea is a blurry path, and we need to convert our ideas into a crystal clear set of steps in order to achieve our dream.
So here’s 5 steps to turn your ideas into actions.
Whilst we’re quick to be the dreamers and fill our minds with our ideas, as creatives we’re quick to put a glass ceiling on our dreams as well, telling ourselves that we’re not quite good enough and that our ideas just a crazy dream. But those ideas need to be given the opportunity to be a little larger than life and out of this world. Drop the inner critic and allow yourself to dream big with no glass ceiling.
Narrow the dream
Once we have the big picture, the easy option is to put it in the too hard basket because it genuinely seems impossible, and often it is impossible – right now. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not possible. Take the big dream and squeeze in the seams a little. Narrow the dream so that it’s a viable dream within 12 months. This might mean that you have to reduce the scale, or the capacity of the dream, or that you have to break it up into a few bite sized chunks and just focus on one of those mouthfuls.
Where are you now?
What sits in the gap between where you are right now and the narrowed down dream? If we don’t address all of the barriers that are stopping us from achieving our dream they will always create a gap that is hard to cross.
Overcome the gap
Barriers are only ever temporary. Regardless of whether it’s money, time, skills or knowledge, all barriers can be overcome. The tipping point between an idea staying on the other side of the valley or you taking steps towards it is whether you can identify what you need or how you can overcome each barrier.
Insight to action
Now it’s time to turn the insight into action. The big dream may not be possible today or even tomorrow, but by taking 1 – 3 of the actions you identified to overcome the barriers and working towards these as your monthly goals means that rather than sitting your dream on the shelf for the day when there are no barriers or obstacles in the way, you’re stepping on the path that has your dream as a destination.
