Overwhelm. It’s how I’ve wrapped up February. As each month comes to a close I find myself spending a lot of time in reflection, because whilst I wholeheartedly believe in forward focus I think it’s equally as important to look back so that we can learn. February has been a big 26 days and with only 3 days left it’s going to wrap up as a big month. I marked February as my ‘official’ kick off to the blog year, with a new volume of content and new themes and series on the blog too and whilst I feel like I’ve rolled out a lot in a month, it’s truly just a snapshot of what’s to come. Behind the scenes I’ve been feverishly working on a new look for the blog which is super exciting (and equally as nerve wracking) which will really tie together my big vision for Dunne with Style. My family was also thrown some life hurdles in February which has made us really step back and take time to look after one another and realise how precious this thing called ‘life’ really is. It’s also given me a bit of extra time for reflection, so whilst I’ve been bravely carving a slightly new path here at Dunne with Style I’ve been listening. Listening and absorbing information in an attempt to learn. So why the overwhelm? Because I’ve realised that all that listening that I was doing wasn’t driven by a desire to learn. It was driven by a desire to be reassured. Reassured that what I was doing was ‘right’, that the path I was taking was the right one. But rather than feel reassured I just felt overwhelmed. Why? Because there are some amazing people out there to learn from and the wave of digital marketing and self made start ups that we’re living amongst right now has made accessing information about ‘success’ a mere click away. And whilst I am a self confessed learning addict and am always trying to learn something new to better myself and my business, there has to be a line where you stop listening. Because for every time I’ve been told that ‘personal’ blogging is dead and only evergreen content is worthwhile, I’ve received an email from someone to say ‘thank you’ for sharing my story as it is now. For every time on social media that I’ve been criticised for my ‘filtered’ or ‘curated’ life content on social media I’ve been told by someone else that they feel connected to me and that they know me and my family without really knowing me and my family. For every argument for there’s always an argument against.
So my advise? Be you. Be prepared to do things your way if it feels right. Listen, by all means listen and learn, but don’t be defined by someone else’s path. Be prepared for the good and the bad that comes with change, that you can’t please everyone, but you don’t have to. Be prepared to not receive the reassurance you’re searching for, but don’t sell your dreams short because of the advise of someone else. Your path hasn’t been walked yet.
