In the last edition of You’re Melbourne finds we went to the melting pot that is South Melbourne and at the heart of every melting pot is a market place. South Melbourne Market is one of the oldest continuing markets established in 1867 which now has a focus on supporting local producers and small creative businesses.
Market mornings should begin with good coffee and in true You’re Melbourne finds style I’m adding a classic hole in the wall coffee spot to the list of favourite coffee spots. Clement Coffee keeps it simple, great coffee, great pastries, great people, what more could you ask for?
Meander round the corner onto Coventry Street and see what unique floral finds are on offer at Azalea. Owner Michael comes from a lineage of florists and flower growers and brings the buzz of the ever changing offerings of the flower markets to Azalea customers.
At the end of Coventry Street stop in at Proper & Son for a bite to eat and coffee refuel. Propor & Son strive to provide fast food service with slow food ethos. With a seasonal weekly menu based upon what’s available in the market, Proper & Son is really showcasing the best the market has to offer.
As you move towards the meat and deli hall make sure you pass by Aptus Seafood (if you can get close!) famous for its freshly shucked $1 oysters. And as your market day comes to an end, rest your feet whilst you enjoy a glass of wine at Claypots Evening Star. Sister restaurant to the iconic Claypots St Kilda and known for it’s live music and woft of fresh seafood cooking.
